Savings Bonds Interest Rates

Savings bonds interest rates vary greatly on the time of year, when they were purchased, what type of bond was purchased, and numerous other factors.

Every six months the savings bonds interest rates change.  This happens on May first and November first.

There are six different types of bonds.  Series EE Bonds, Series I Bonds, Series I Fixed Rate Bonds, Series I Variable Rate Bonds, Series HH Bonds, and Series E Bonds.

Series EE Bonds were implemented in 1980.  They are low risk bonds that are used to save up for special events, such as retirement, or graduation gift, or other big purchases.

The maturity rule for Series EE Bonds is that interest is earned every month, and compounded annually.  The Goverment guarantees that Series EE Bonds will double in original value within 20 years.

Series I Bonds were made with the purpose to protect against inflation.  They also have the guarantee of never losing money, meaning, you can never get less than what you originally paid for the Series I Bond.  All Series I Bonds stop gaining interest after 30 years from the purchase date.

Series I Variable and Series I Fixed Rate bonds both function under the same rules of Series I bonds.

Series HH Bonds were used to replace Series H bonds.  They were implemented in 1980.  The minimum value you can invest in a Series HH bond is five hundred dollars.  The maximum maturity rate of Series HH bonds is 20 years.

Series E bonds are no longer for sale.  They were replaced by Series EE bonds.

Now, for the savings bonds interest rates!

Series EE Bonds are at 1.2%, which is up .2% from the last six months.  Still not very high, though.

Series I Bonds are at 1.74%, down from 3.36% in the previous six month period of time.  Not doing the best right now, but hopefully it'll get back up there.

Series I Fixed Rate Bonds are down to .2%, from .3% in the last six month period.   Pretty low but it is a fixed rate so that is expected.

Series I Varaiable Rate Bonds are down to 1.54%, from 3.06% in the last six month period.  Also not doing that great right now.

Series HH Bonds are at 1.5%, and always will be because it is a fixed rate.  People use Series HH Bonds as a reliable source of money because they are always the same.

Series E Bonds varies from 3.98% to 6.03%.  And since you can't purchase those anymore it just depends on when you bought them originally.
